Welcome to the 30th Conference of the French Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (Sofmer). The main theme this year will be Innovation in rehabilitation and new technologies adapted to disabilities. This is the challenge of the future in order to reduce activity limitations in children, adults and older persons confronted to disabilities and contribute to improving their quality of life and autonomy. This innovating theme is an integrant part of the Languedoc-Roussillon and the cities of Montpellier and Nimes, where many actors, physicians, rehabilitations specialists, research teams and industrial partners are involved in these innovations.

The 30th SOFMER conference will also propose several common sessions organized with other French and European scientific societies, as well the Institut Fédératif de Recherche sur le Handicap (IFRH), Inserm and CNRS to review the latest advances in the field of disability research and continuing education.

Finally, like every year, the conference will be happy to welcome the International Teaching Program organized by the Cofemer and dedicated to European physical and Rehabilitation Medicine trainees in partnership with the European Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine and the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine.

Professor Gilles Rode
President of the SOFMER

The Languedoc-Roussillon region, host to travelers and cultural exchanges, welcomes the 30th SOFMER Conference. It is a great honor to have been chosen and we are very touched by this gesture of trust and confidence.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) has been developed since the beginning of the fifties, first in thermal resorts, then in the main cities, with a constant dynamism. Several healthcare centers cover the main PM&R fields. The Hospital-University team was able to evolve in an auspicious environment, developing within the School of Medicine of Montpellier-Nimes, a dynamic PM&R teaching and research activity, especially around motor impairments and their consequences.

Our school of medicine, the oldest one in Europe still in activity (established in 1220) has acquired a tradition of PM&R education and training. Our specialty is taught by teams belonging to the University Hospitals of Montpellier and Nimes but also from the main regional centers that take an active part in this teaching activity. The scientific environment is especially rich in the field of neurosciences, sciences of human movement and technological research applied to severe impairments, disability and performance. Assistive techniques for helping with disability impairments, especially digital technologies, were developed in close partnership with research laboratories of the New University of Montpellier, Engineering Schools, but also several small emerging companies. The Montpellier-Nimes Hospital-University Federation is strongly involved in their activity and development thanks to this applied translational research dynamics integrating the local industry network.

PM&R teams are particularly delighted to welcome the 30th SOFMER Conference while continuing the objectives of the former conferences such as sharing scientific knowledge and professional development, but also by proposing a reflection, which we hope to be fruitful, on the impact of technological innovations, neurosciences and a specific focus on the organization of PM&R practices.

We welcome you all to the Terres Occitanes,

The Local Organizing Committee
