Alabaster Coast, Etretat: long walk in a breathtaking resort

Of all the towns along the Alabaster Coast (Côte d'Albâtre) in Haute-Normandie (Upper Normandy, France), Étretat has the most spectacular views, both looking at and looking down from its famous chalk cliffs and needles, which were so beloved as a subject by the Impressionist painters (Claude Monet made more than 60 paintings there!). The town has some lovely old buildings, but is best known as the prettiest seaside resort between Le Havre and Dieppe, flanked by dramatic chalk cliffs, even several arches, as well as charming coves and beaches.

You will not just stay on the beach, but you will be invited to take the paths that go up the cliffs. You will climb the paths and walk along the cliff's edges for quite a distance. This will provide you with spectacular views. You will need good walking shoes, a hat and sunglasses.

Route des Abbayes: medieval history and beautiful roman architecture (short walk)

The Normandy abbeys route encompasses the most prestigious architectural sites of breathtaking beauties and fascinating history: Norman abbeys, thousand year old foundations… some lie along the great pilgrimage routes and tourist itineraries, while others are located in the green folds of the countryside; some have remained homes to religious communities, whereas others have found a new vocation as museums or cultural centers. Some are splendid ruins, others are still used as Parish churches nowadays. All of them retain their power to attract us and invite us to the heart of Mystery, a voyage in medieval times…

For this excursion, we will visit Saint-Martin de Boscherville, where stands one of the most prestigious Roman abbeys in the Haute-Normandie region, called Saint-Georges Abbey. Nestling in the Seine Valley, on the edge of the forest of Roumare, Saint-Georges de Boscherville is an ideal place to visit and for a walk through a site with two thousand years of history.

Giverny: see Monet's home on your way back to Paris

A visit to Claude Monet's house and gardens is an enchanting experience as the gardens and water lilies blossom again as in the days of the impressionist master! The gardens have been replanted in 1980 as they once were, the collection of Japanese prints restored and left in the house to be admired. Monet arrived there in 1883 and lived there until his death in 1926, at the age of 86.

A visit of the village allows discovery of more of the environment of the impressionist painter and the village life at his time.
